Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject matter and the manner of representation can be compared to the Naif movement. The Naif artist is by definition self-taught, someone who has not attended academies but has found inspiration within himself. From a stylistic perspective, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with childlike and
Unknowingly primitivist. However, even the naive artist, in his spontaneity, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a very specific aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism.
Artist George Lilanga's style can be described as naive, primarily because it cannot be categorized into any one stylistic movement. His version of reality, simplified and imaginatively modified, plays with images, creating a playful and creative composition. To this end, the artist takes all the necessary liberties. He distorts his subjects by elongating them, subverts the concept of space, and plays with the rules by compressing the composition. The stereotypical image thus becomes a fundamental element within the composition's economy, drawing inspiration from African tribal culture.
George Lilanga (Kikwetu, 1934 – Dar es Salaam, 2005). Trained at the Tingatinga school of painting in Dar es Salaam, he is also known internationally for his distinctive pictorial style, characterized by brightly colored figures with sharp, dynamic, and caricatural contours. His works were exhibited extensively in many countries and he was recognized as one of Africa's greatest artists, probably the greatest artist.
Contemporary African. During these years, his works took on increasingly larger dimensions. It was also during this period that, after many years, he returned to intensely devoting himself to sculpture, creating numerous works in softwood (usually mninga or mkongo) brightly colored with oil enamels.
