Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The painting is part of a pair of portraits by Georges Duprè, likely of a married couple. Georges Duprè was a 19th-century French painter. Originally from Lyon, he was born in 1807 and died in 1853. He was an academic painter who devoted himself primarily to genre painting, with a highly classical sense of pictorial technique and extraordinary technique. This can be seen from an analysis of this work, in which the clothing, hairstyle, and, above all, the demeanor of the sitter—who appears ordinary, with no intention of moral or psychological contextualization—indicate this painting as a product of highly skilled official portraiture.
