Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The execution of this work, attributed to Gerolamo Induno, is characterized by a highly classical conception of painting, based on timeless principles of balance, harmony, and naturalism, yet characterized by a profound veristic undertone. The achievement of these characteristics is guaranteed by the fact that Induno can be considered a master of drawing and color. Through his excellent technique, he creates a concrete portrait, thanks to an exaltation of plasticity that creates space around the figure. Color intervenes on this solid structure, making everything extremely alive and vibrant. His strokes are extremely delicate, capable of ensuring immediacy and freshness to the composition. The artist, aware of and up-to-date on 19th-century pictorial innovations, seeks a veristic complexity, capturing the true perception of the human eye. Finally, the palette used completes the quest for a perfect naturalistic and veristic rendering, thanks to brilliant hues full of flashes of light.
The work is attributed to Gerolamo Induno. Born in Milan in 1825, he was Domenico's younger brother and a student of Luigi Sabatelli at the Brera Academy. Directly involved in the anti-Austrian uprisings of 1848, he was forced to leave Milan upon the return of Radetzky's troops. He and Domenico took refuge in Switzerland. He then moved to Florence, where he volunteered to fight against the French in the defense of Rome under General Giacomo Medici. He also took part in the defense of Rome under siege by the French. In 1855, he and his brother participated in the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Here, authoritative critics, including Théophile Gautier, appreciated his work. His success was always linked to Risorgimento subjects, battles, and themes of domestic intimacy. He exhibited at Italian and international exhibitions. In 1873 he participated in the International Exhibition in Vienna, then in 1877 in the one in Naples, then in Turin (1880), Milan (1881), Rome (1883), Venice (1887). Gerolamo Induno died in Milan in 1890.
