Description of the work
Description of the work
Giacomo Campi, a native of Cremona, was born in Milan in 1846. He began his painting studies with Professor Gandolfi, then moved to the Carrara Academy in Bergamo under the painter Scuri. He then worked in Rome at the Vatican, at the Roman College with the painter Francesco Podesti. In 1870 he settled in Milan, where he opened a studio. His paintings are found in many noble Milanese residences: in the Bagatti-Valsecchi house, in Manzoni's house, in Piazza Belgioioso in Milan, in the Arnaboldi castle in Carimate, in the home of Duke Melzi, of the Prince of Castelbarco, in several villas in St. Moritz and San Remo, in the Giacobbe house in Magenta, in the Hotel Plinius in Como and Angleterre in Venice, and in the house of the banker Alplon in Paris; in the audience halls of the royal palace in Monza, in Romanengo, in Cardano al Campo, in Saronno, in the Vatican, at the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome; and in New York. King Umberto knighted him; the city of St. Moritz granted him Swiss citizenship; the government appointed him professor of drawing; he was an honorary member of numerous Italian art societies. Giacomo Campi was also responsible for the frescoes that cover the vault of the Teatro Lirico in Magenta. He died on December 8, 1921.
