Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.

Looking at works like this, it's clear that Giacomo Filosa, in his execution of the "Still Life" genre, pays particular attention to one of the leading masters in this field, Giorgio Morandi. He therefore engages in a profound process of reflection on objects in order to capture their most vivid image. In this process, the painter is aided by the light that bathes the composition, leading the artist to reduce the objects until their true essence remains. What remains is an almost diaphanous yet extremely alive and dynamic image, shaken by genuine existential (as well as luminous) vibrations. Another fundamental element, also common to Morandi's still lifes, is obviously the formal perfection and balance of the composition (which in Filosa also permeates his landscapes), which hark back to the great tradition of Italian painting.
Giacomo Filosa was a painter born in Castellamare di Stabia in 1912 and died in 2002. He trained in his father's workshop, a restorer and gilder. He later acquired considerable experience, especially in the use of color, which led him to exhibit in important exhibitions throughout Italy. His works, primarily landscapes and still lifes, are held in important public and private collections.
