Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
The entire execution of this work is based on a strong gestural conception of pictorial practice. The artist channels inner energies and transforms them into gestures of great expressive power that fill the surface of the painting. The impetus is such that it leaves no empty space on the panel, and the gestures almost seem to be positioned in a sort of three-dimensionality in which different emotional attitudes overlap to construct an iconography as complex as the unconscious. Then the dense, thick color is applied in broad palette knife strokes, frenetic brushstrokes, darting strokes, or left to drip, free to unleash its emotions.
Giacomo Mannocci was born in 1982 in Livorno. His education began in Pisa, where he graduated from the Art School and continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. His association with several local painters was crucial, introducing him to the post-Macchiaioli Livorno painting tradition. He lives and works in Livorno.
