Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. This portrait, in particular, is inspired by the famous literary character "Lolita," created by Vladimir Nabokov in 1955.
This etched portrait is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of the subject and communicate it on the gold plate in a visionary and almost surreal way. Therefore, through the expressive medium of pure line, Porzano develops a highly synthesised process, reducing the subject to a concentration of intense spirituality and emotion. Thus, the wavy lines of the hair do not hide the large eyes and fixed gaze, while the mouth is rendered in a refined arabesque. What emerges is an interior portrait of the subject, essential and of an archaic expressive power. All of this is rooted in the influences of psychoanalysis and the revelation of the unconscious, which guide Porzano's research, even in his paintings.
Giacomo Porzano, born in Lerici in 1925 and died in Pescosolido in 2006, was an Italian graphic designer, illustrator, and painter. He studied literature and art history on his own, cultivating a passion for drawing and painting. He enrolled in both the Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture. He made his artistic debut between 1949 and 1950. He held his first solo exhibition in Rome, at the L'Obelisco gallery on Via Sistina. His work for the weekly magazine "L'Espresso" earned him considerable popularity. In the 1960s, he was invited to several solo exhibitions in the US, at the ACA Gallery in New York. He collaborated with several Roman galleries, including Don Chisciotte (1962-63), Penelope, La Borgognona, and La Rondanini. In 1984, he held a solo exhibition at the Ca' d'Oro, a famous gallery that was then on Via Condotti.
