Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This is evident in the way the artist modulates the light, which creates iridescent hues in the sky and on the surface of the water. Even the very shapes of the objects and the figure in the foreground seem to be eroded by the reflections in a space shrouded in a soft haze.

Giacomo Tabellini was a Livorno painter born in 1907 and died in 1989. He primarily painted still lifes and seascapes. He is a worthy representative of the Livorno school of painting, although his style does not display a marked penchant for post-Impressionist language like other exponents of the Livorno group.
