Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. Artist Giacomo Vaccaro's favorite iconographic themes are episodes of everyday life, scenes of work in the fields, or scenes of the sea.
The painting can be defined as a genre scene not only because of its subject matter, a folk scene, but also because of the painter's objective and highly didactic language. The work's approach is figurative, and Vaccaro demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering in a narrative representation rich in detail. Nevertheless, the painter does not shy away from using lively hatching to ensure greater freshness in the execution, and the work is structured with a consistent tonalism that perfectly conveys the atmosphere of a sunny day.
Giacomo Vaccaro was born in 1953 in Sassetta, a small village in the Livorno hinterland. Displaying a talent for painting from childhood, he decided to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he graduated. It was in this beautiful city that he met the great Maestro Pietro Annigoni, who would reveal to him the secrets, techniques, and tricks of painting in general, but especially portraiture. Vaccaro, arriving in Livorno at a young age, was completely captivated by the city's charm, so much so that he adopted all its characteristic traits (brilliant spirit, sincerity, wit, charm, etc.). A member of the Gruppo Labronico, he still lives and works in Livorno, immortalizing urban views, seascapes, landscapes, compositions, portraits, and everything pictorial for him. Numerous trips from Northern Europe to Spain and North Africa have enriched the Maestro's cultural background.
