Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
In this painting, Giampietro Maggi adopts a substantially figurative language, creating a work with strong ties to phenomenal reality. However, one can detect some anti-naturalistic overtones in the artist's interpretation of this work, implemented in an expressionistic manner. Through his pictorial approach, the objects are somewhat reduced, eliminating detail in favor of a more generalized and synthetic representation. This process of synthesis allows the depiction of the vase of flowers to become a refined interplay of balances of mass and color. It is remarkable how everything is rendered vibrant by Giampietro Maggi's complex brushstrokes. The work's tonal unity, based on a range of grays and blues, is also striking.
Giampietro Maggi is a Milanese painter born in 1934, who lives and works in his hometown. His career spans over fifty years, featuring numerous solo and group exhibitions and winning national and international awards. This journey culminated with the retrospective exhibition held in Milan entitled "A Life for Art." He was also named a Knight of the Italian Republic for his artistic achievements.
