Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject appears to be a portrait of Pope Pius X (Riese 1835 - Rome 1914). Born Melchiorre Giuseppe Sarto, he was proclaimed pope in 1903. Remembered for his humble life, spent in the Vatican cared for by his sisters, he was canonized in 1954. His papacy was distinguished by a strongly theological focus, opposed to modernism. He initiated the reform of Canon Law, which was concluded in 1917.
The portrait was created by Sanna with a predominantly expressionist language. The figure appears in perfect profile: emptied of plasticity, it is constructed in a two-dimensional space. The figure is essentially synthesised through color, distributed in broad, textured strokes. The representation is deliberately crude, charged with primary values that exalt the spiritual sanctity of the figure of Saint Pius X.
The painter Sanna is an artist who has developed his own stylistic signature, based on an elaborate use of paint and color. His language, in terms of the gestural nature of his work, resembles Expressionism.
