Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist currents of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Gian Maria Suprani's highly original artistic production, the urban view, in this case inspired by the city of Venice, takes on a very particular connotation. Indeed, in this lithograph, he develops his metaphysical and playful poetics.
This highly exemplary lithograph of Gian Maria Suprani's style clearly demonstrates how this artist has fully embraced the concepts of "displacement" and "condensation," borrowed from the metaphysical aesthetic founded by Giorgio De Chirico. The urban landscape is transformed into a jumble of objects that inexplicably appear against the backdrop of St. Mark's Square. The choice of objects undoubtedly draws on a process of mental associations that, in Gian Maria's case, constantly hark back to the world of play and childhood. Indeed, "play" is the key word for interpreting metaphysics in Suprani's reimagined version. Not only in the choice of objects, but also in their representation, Gian Maria's work has an exquisitely playful character. Indeed, compared to those of De Chirico, our artist's Italian squares lose their silent, timeless atmosphere, instead acquiring a boisterous, playful spirit. We see it also from a formal perspective, where De Chirico's dry hyperrealism gives way to an almost pop representation of objects, made of bright colors and rounded shapes. Accumulation, moreover, becomes paroxysmal, whereas in traditional metaphysics, the spaces appear almost empty, and everything is arranged in an extremely complex space, constructed according to multiple directives.
Artist Gian Maria Suprani stands out for his extremely eclectic nature. His artistic production ranges from the simplicity of his subjects, drawn from everyday life (toys, bouquets of flowers, boats at sea), to the complexity of his representations, exploring the worlds of metaphysics or magical realism. All of this is united by a complex language, in which the key element is the predominance of pure and brilliant color palettes.
