Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
This work is part of a series in which Gian Maria Suprani displays a different approach than his usual easel work. In these drawings, the artist displays a more instinctive nature, which is also reflected in his rapid and immediate drawing style. A black line dominates, sketching the forms with a certain expressionistic vigor. The work is completed by pastel, which, with its nervous and agitated strokes, imbues the subject with existential vibrations.
Artist Gian Maria Suprani stands out for his extremely eclectic nature. His artistic production ranges from the simplicity of his subjects, drawn from everyday life (toys, bouquets of flowers, boats at sea), to the complexity of his representations, exploring the worlds of metaphysics or magical realism. All of this is united by a complex language, in which the key element is the predominance of pure and brilliant color palettes.
