Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers, or plants in general, as independent subjects, began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the world of flowers and plants, as they offered an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers and plants were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers and plants also became a way of interpreting reality.
In his works with a floral/vegetal theme, the artist Giancarlo Cazzaniga prefers
a distinctly expressionist stylistic form. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic way, with a notable exercise in data reduction.
sensitive. The representation is resolved, in fact, entirely on the level of the
pictorial gesture and the drafting has a fundamental role in communicating the
the artist's most intimate perception of things. In fact, color is very
full-bodied and this prerogative makes Giancarlo Cazzaniga succeed
to investigate the volume of objects even within a surface
substantially two-dimensional. From a compositional point of view the painting
it is resolved in a coloristic material that is almost modeled by the painter.
Giancarlo Cazzaniga was born in Monza in 1930 and passed away in 2013. In 1950, he attended the Cimabue Academy of Art in Milan. His friendship with journalist and art critic Aurelio Sioli introduced him to the famous Pirovini sisters' dairy and the artistic milieu that thrived there. He began frequenting the Brera district, participating in cultural debate, and associating with the protagonists of the cultural movement later defined as Existential Realism. He made his debut in the 1950s, participating in public and thematic exhibitions, and then holding his first solo exhibition in 1957 in Brescia. He exhibited at the Permanente in Milan in 1958, having been invited to the "Young Italian Artists" exhibition, and in 1959, again in Milan, he won the San Fedele Prize. In the 1960s, he was invited to the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale.
