Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject presented by Orrù in this graphic art seems to have aspects reminiscent of Surrealism, with some hints of Fauvism. The artist's evocative and raw depiction suggests this movement. The figure of this woman, struck by the eagle hovering over her body, is a representation verging on dreamlike. Indeed, the Surrealist movement itself aims to depict the real workings of thought, uncontrolled by reason, using the mechanisms of the unconscious. Orrù's figures themselves have aspects that are disconnected from one another and are only connected within the paper. The evocative power of these works is also due to the graphic representation. Graphic art is widely used by numerous artists; it is not simply a print, but rather the direct intervention of the artist's hand. The work was composed with a vivid realism, aiming to create a sense of alienation for the viewer. The subject vibrates on the paper thanks to an evocative representation of particular elements, such as the woman and the eagle, the man slumped on a rock, and, in the background, figures juxtaposed with an urban building. All of this is set within a context delineated only by the choice of strong hues, distant from real-world colors, which accentuate the expressionistic quality. Furthermore, a commendable technical skill is evident in the drawing, which, overall, marks a representation tied to emotional aspects. Artist Giancarlo Orrù, born in 1948 in Lunamatrona, Sardinia, moved to Turin with his family at an early age, where he began his artistic career. In 1966, at the age of eighteen, he had his first solo exhibition. From there, he had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, exhibiting his art from 1968 to 1973. Upon his return to Italy, he settled in Milan in 1977, where he opened his own studio with other artists. In 1977, he moved to Ripatransone and organized several exhibitions with the Pro Arte association. He has illustrated several books by Temistocle Pasqualini.
