Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting is a symbolic portrait featuring a woman's face in close-up. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that this face is not complete, but is composed and broken down into various masks. The left side of the face has delicate and realistic features, while the right side merges into a series of profiles and shapes that clearly recall other faces or masks. This superimposition is a visual way to explore the idea that the human personality is not a single thing, but is made up of multiple identities or "masks" we wear in everyday life. The artist is not simply portraying a person, but is revealing the psychological complexity that lies beneath appearances.
Giancarlo Vaccarezza's style can be described as figurative expressionism with a strong symbolic imprint. The artist paints the figure in a recognizable manner, but distorts and transforms it to express meaning. The predominant colors are warm and earthy, with shades of ochre, brown, and beige, contrasting with the white of the face and the touches of black that outline the masks. The choice of these forms is not accidental: each element is a symbol. For example, the transformation of the face into masks symbolizes the complexity of human identity and the diverse faces that reveal themselves to the world. The brushstrokes are bold and full-bodied.
Giancarlo Vaccarezza was born in Viareggio in 1943. In 1957, he attended a technical drawing course and began working as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 1959, he enrolled at the Free Academy of Carrara and began his first experiences with painting. His first solo exhibition was held in 1965 at the town hall of Borgo San Lorenzo. He became involved with the cultural and political movement of Democratic Psychiatry. His contact with this movement and his commitment to human rights led him to frequent mental institutions and to focus his painting on the problems of marginalization. In 1984, he exhibited in England in the traveling exhibition "Vivere Liberi" (Living Free), which toured to London, Manchester, and Sheffield. Since 1993, he has taught painting and established the Versilia painters' atelier. In 1996, he exhibited a series of paintings dedicated to the "Padule" at the "Il Forte" gallery in Forte dei Marmi. In 2000, he exhibited at the Scuderie Borbone in Camaiore in the exhibition "Giro di valzer" 40 years of painting. In 2001, he exhibited at the "arte e dintorni" gallery in Pontedera in the exhibition "Quando c'è musica..." and in 2002, he held a solo exhibition at the APT building of the province of Massa Carrara.
