Description of the work
Description of the work
The two sculptures are inspired by a classicist conception of sculptural art. Indeed, Giandomenico Daniele Monassi's artistic language draws explicitly from classical antiquity, both Greek and Roman, as well as from its revival during the Renaissance. This translates into an execution whose primary objective is mimesis, that is, the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Along with naturalistic rendering, the other fundamental concept, within the parameters of Classicism, is the unity of the work of art, through a harmonious correspondence between all its parts. Examining the subject of the two sculptures in more detail, the first is a reproduction of the Triton Fountain, located in Piazza Barberini in Rome and created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1642 and 1643. The second sculpture is a female nude, a recurring theme in classical statuary.
As we can see in these two bas-reliefs, the sculptor Giandomenico Daniele Monassi pursues a completely naturalistic rendering, which he achieves through his remarkable technique. The artist manages to emphasize the subjects' volumes, creating a balanced relationship within the work. The physiognomies are highly precise, with a certain idealization. The plasticity is very pronounced in both the anatomical rendering and the architectural structures. Giandomenico Daniele Monassi's sculptural technique is characterized by a striking use of color in the strong contrast between solids and voids, between light and dark. The two figures thus appear truly concrete and create their own space within the work. The whole is constructed on orderly and rational lines, in an overall concept of harmony and balance of the parts.
Artist Giandomenico Daniele Monassi stands out for his classical and traditional conception of art, which informs his extraordinary sculptural technique. His bas-reliefs are characterized by an exceptional naturalistic rendering and a composition based on principles of harmony and balance.
