Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
This work is part of Gianfranco Autunnali's more figurative phase. The entire style of this painting is a continuous modulation between different registers. On the one hand, a meticulously detailed representation based on rigorous drawing. On the other, a more cursive approach aimed at exploiting the expressive qualities of color. These two approaches merge to create a work in which a love of detail is combined with a freshness of execution. Thus, while the depiction of the boat is more objective, the sea and waves feature a more lively hatching, suited to capturing chromatic and luminous vibrations.
Gianfranco Autunnali is a Tuscan painter, born in Piombino in 1945, where he lives and works. He trained at the Free Academy of Fine Arts in Livorno, and in addition to being a painter, he is also a graphic artist and printmaker. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows, primarily in his native region, but also in cities such as Rome, Jesolo, Venice, and Salerno.
