Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In this specific case, we find ourselves faced with a beautiful example of a rural landscape, and the subject of the work is a charming glimpse of a country village. This choice is perfectly in keeping with the artist's background, Gianfranco Frezzolini. The work is inspired by the vision of a rural Tuscany, made up of small, solitary villages with a few peasant dwellings, where human presence is almost or entirely absent. Consequently, Frezzolini is connected to a long tradition of Tuscan painting that begins with the interest in rural subjects of the artists of the Macchiaioli group in the second half of the 19th century, up to the solitary villages, immortalised in an almost metaphysical rationalism by Ottone Rosai.
All of Gianfranco Frezzolini's landscape paintings are based on achieving a balance between pictorial vibrations of a post-Impressionist style and the exploration of sensory data through a geometric rationalization of forms. In short, we can say that he stands, even stylistically, halfway between the Macchiaioli and Ottone Rosai, while always keeping in mind, of course, the lessons of Paul Cézanne. Thus, to a highly accentuated pictorial synthesis, capable of rendering objects with a few rapid brush strokes, Frezzolini combines a keen sense of structure and form. This structural value is especially found in his more synthetic and minimalist landscapes, but in the present work, we can sense a prevailing desire for a perfectly naturalistic rendering of the view. The frame, then, expands to encompass a large portion of the landscape, where the concrete volumes of the houses are immersed in a coherent space unified by atmosphere and light.
Gianfranco Frezzolini was an artist born in 1929 and died in 1994. From a very young age, he frequented the Florentine and Tuscan artistic scene, particularly Ottone Rosai. Throughout his life, he held numerous solo exhibitions in Tuscany and many other Italian cities, as well as abroad, particularly in cities in the United States, France, Switzerland, and Denmark. His work received high critical acclaim. Several of his works are included in public and private collections in Italy and abroad.
