Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. In Gianfranco Gattamelata's artistic production, however, the genre scene, set in an intimate, bourgeois setting, loses all realist connotations, transfigured into an "other" dimension by the abstract, post-Cubist language typical of this painter.
