Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
In this work, artist Giangiacomo Merli displays some of his distinctive artistic techniques. Chromatically, we find the immersion in light that characterizes his work, including his landscapes, and the shape of the flower vase clearly displays the customary calligraphic touch, characteristic of a brush technique. Everything is imbued with the same intangible, two-dimensional consistency, typical of Giangiacomo Merli and other masters inspired by Lombard Chiarism. His stylization, a recurring theme in his urban views, is also distinctive: the vase and the flowers within are constructed with thin lines that give them the appearance of fragile, delicate forms. Indeed, everything is rendered light and diaphanous in the delicate chromatic balance created by the transfiguration of light.
Giangiacomo Merli was born in Milan in 1921. He graduated from the Brera Art School and the Brera Academy, where he studied under Aldo Carpi. He attended the Circolo del Gatto Nero. He joined the Society for Fine Arts at the Permanente in Milan, where he exhibited in the early 1960s. In 1975, he was invited to exhibit at the UNESCO Palace in Paris and won the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition. In 1979, his lithographs were chosen by Bolaffi Arte for its subscribers. In 1981, the City of Milan held a solo exhibition of his work at the Museo di Milano on Via S. Andrea. In 1982, he won the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. In 1986, the City of Campione d'Italia organized an exhibition in his honor at the Galleria Civica. In 1987, SEA - Società Esercizi Aeroporti, on the occasion of the twinning of Milan/Linate and Paris/Orly, invited him to exhibit. In 1992, the Galleria S. Vidal in Venice hosted his last solo exhibition. He died in 1998.
