Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
A very interesting work that demonstrates a different approach than Spadari's usual approach, which leans toward a pop aesthetic. In this case, however, the artist adopts a completely informal language, in which the landscape is reconfigured through the painter's expressive gestures. The informal approach Spadari proposes here is composed of sinuous structures that find their own three-dimensionality in space. Spadari also introduces a more instinctive component in the color red, which is allowed to flow freely.
Giangiacomo Spadari was born in 1938 in the Republic of San Marino. His career began in 1961, when he moved to Milan, where he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Spotorno. Initially, he turned to a kind of existential realism. In 1966, Spadari found his signature style, exploring the climate of 1968 and the student protests, revisiting these issues with a pop approach. The use of solarized photographs or images from films or newspapers transformed him into true icons of contemporary art.
