The series of drawings fall within the genre scene category, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered equally important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. In this collection, the artist Gianni Borta, compared to his predominantly Informal production, creates a series of studies of the human figure in which he employs a more figurative language.
This collection of studies is truly fascinating for understanding how an Informel artist came to conceive his own artistic style by elaborating his perception into a pronounced synthesis of reality. Indeed, these compositions, which employ a language somewhere between abstract and figurative, represent the intermediate step between the recording of sensory data and their transfiguration into the artist's gestures, which we find accomplished in Informel and Abstract Expressionist paintings. Reality is reduced to a few agitated signs that identify the structures of subjects and objects, already conveying the artist's sensibility in gesture. Despite the simplicity of the expressive means, the scenes are characterized by great rhythm and personality. Where color intervenes, this vigorous expressionism, which seeks to translate reality into pictorial gesture, is confirmed.
Gianni Borta was born in Udine in 1941. He is considered a leading figure in what is now known as naturalistic art, for his extraordinary and unique painting style. He has participated in major art exhibitions: the Biennials, the Trivenete, the National Quadrennial of Rome, Suzzara, the Arte Fiera of Bologna, Expo Levante in Bari, the Kunstemesse 1979 in Basel, the Art Fair Washington (USA), the 15th Graphic Arts Biennial in Ljubljana (SLO), "Kurnst aus Italien" (from Futurism to Transavanguardia) in Munich, the 1st Grand Prix Alpe Adria, the Tivoli Gallery in Ljubljana, the Frankfurt International Art Fair, the Padua Art Fair, Vicenza, Bologna, Parma, Bari, Genoa, Reggio Emilia, Florence, Brescia, Tuyap Istanbul, Art Fair Makkunsy Wien 96, the International Print Triennial Krakow Poland-Cracow, Europ'Art Genève-Geneva, Art-Cannes, Art Philadelphia, Arteexpo New York.
