Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
In this study, the eclectic artist Gianni Brusamolino, always eager to experiment with new and diverse languages, offers an almost metaphysical interpretation of the female figure. Indeed, the figure clearly has a classical feel, exalting its monumental plastic qualities. The rendering, however, is built on a rationality of volumes that renders the figure enigmatic and mysterious. Gianni Brusamolino's technique is excellent, demonstrating his skill in graphic design as well.
Gianni Brusamolino was born in Cassano d'Adda in 1928. In 1947, he won first prize in painting and the following year in drawing in two competitions held by the Ministry of Culture in Rome. During those same years, he moved to Milan and enrolled at Brera Art Museum. There, he studied with Carlo Carrà and Marino Marini and became active in Milan's artistic scene. In 1953, he held his first solo exhibition on a specific theme at the Galleria Schettini. Between the 1950s and 1970s, Gianni Brusamolino's career was divided between Italy and France, where he established a fruitful collaboration with Paul Richard. Also in the 1970s, he collaborated with Alberto Veca on the theoretical manifesto "For a Determination of Plastic Space." In 1983, he was invited to hold an exhibition at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. In the 1990s, he continued to work simultaneously on painting and sculpture, on the themes of "Lungo Suono," "Tra-Perari" (sculptures), and "Guardiani-Guerrieri" (painting and sculpture). In 1994, his first major retrospective exhibition was held at the Angelicum in Milan.
