Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
The work is truly fascinating, as it shows us how even the interpretation of a naturalistic and landscape subject in Gianni Fichera's pictorial language can take on surreal and dreamlike overtones. First, we note how formally the style is coldly objective (in line with historical Surrealism and its greatest exponent, Dalí). The representation allows little or no atmospheric or pictorial effects, so the entire scene is transfigured into a visionary dimension, frozen in a livid moonlight. Even in terms of the subject's conception, the painter reflects a certain desire to transcend perceptible reality: especially the bizarre rock formations (still reminiscent of Dalí) are constructed with a magmatic and swirling design, giving the impression that they belong outside of our dimension.
Giovanni Fichera, also known as Occhiolà, was born in Catania in 1925. His artistic output is distinguished by expressionist portraiture and fantastical, bizarre creations inspired by Surrealism. He has exhibited his work worldwide, earning significant international recognition. His work has been discussed by, among others, Carlo Sirtori, Cardinal Martini, John Paul II, Giorgio Mascherpa, Paolo Levi, Pierluigi Bozzia, Renato Guttuso, Bruno Cassinari, Silvio Ceccato, and Carlo Franza.
