Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Gianni Longinotti's style is essentially figurative, and his subjects, too, are embedded in a real dimension. However, the painter's interpretation transcends the sensory world, shifting the representation into a dreamlike mode. The composition is developed in a two-dimensional space, featuring elegant female figures, usually in monochrome white and accentuated plasticity. Throughout the rest of the composition, Longinotti juxtaposes a highly balanced blend of arabesque motifs and mysterious numerical symbols. All this creates a sort of parallel dimension, a magical realism in which real events are transfigured for the purposes of an expressive language that seeks to transfer images from memory to painting. In this work, the painter's attention is focused on the nude, which stands out against a wall with a pictorially dynamic surface, creating a suggestive contrast. The mysterious dimension, typical of Langinotti's work, is confirmed by this disturbing female figure, both in her face and pose.
Gianni Langinotti was a Paduan painter born in 1927 and died in 2007. He initially adhered to the neorealist movement that was widespread in the postwar period. His subjects focused on civic and social issues, to which were also added biographical episodes of the artist. His success came especially in the 1960s, when he held numerous exhibitions thanks to collaborations with various galleries, including international ones.
