Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.

The pictorial style of the artist Gianni Pascoli is always highly recognizable, whether he depicts the female figure or creates lyrical landscapes. Even in this "Cat," one can see how this artist's language is firmly grounded in an expressionism of color. Gianni Pascoli completely eliminates the drawing grid to definitively unleash the full lyrical potential of his brushstrokes. Thus, the cat curled up on the pillow is epitomized by broad strokes of white that simultaneously identify the texture and softness of its fur in a representation charged with immediacy and vitality. The artist also uses a few quick black strokes for counterpoint, but fundamentally, the subject arises from Gianni Pascoli's complex modulation of color, which, in this way, imbues his painting with intense existential vibrations.
Gianni Pascoli is a painter originally from Savona who lives and works in Cairo Montenotte. He trained first at the Academy of Florence and then at the Brera Academy. His style, based on an intense lyricism of color, has been compared to that of Aligi Sassu. Among the awards Gianni Pascoli has received is the prestigious Anthia Prize for figurative arts for Liguria. He is among the artists who have had the honor of painting the Palio di Alba. Since 2011, he has been one of the featured painters in the important national competition "La modella per l'Arte." In 2012 and 2013, he participated in Arte Genova. Throughout his long career, he has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions and at art fairs in Italy and abroad. Between 2015 and 2016, he created an oil painting of the Stations of the Cross, which was installed in the church of Santa Maria e San Giustino in Genoa.
