The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic, allegorical, and, in particular, literary references.

Gianni Testa's works are characterized by an almost exaggerated dynamism, as this painting also demonstrates. The vigorous movement and strength of the divers translate into an expressionist fervor that transforms the entire composition into a vortex of vertical rhythms. Formally, the dynamism is also enhanced through a pronounced painterly style that breaks down the forms. Chromatically, the colors lean toward cool, dark tones, sharply contrasting with the bright whites.

Gianni Testa is an artist born in Rome in 1936, where he still lives and works. Throughout his career, he has participated several times in the Rome Biennale, the Rome Quadrennial, and the Milan Triennale. He has exhibited his work in numerous shows in Italy and abroad (Germany, Basel, New York, Philadelphia). He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Vittorio Sgarbi. In 2014, he was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Complesso del Vittoriano in Rome, presented by Claudio Strinati.
