Description of the work
Description of the work
Sculpture belongs to the genre of a genre scene, that is, the representation of an aspect of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. A very common theme in genre scenes is the hunt.
Looking at this work, we can fully appreciate the sculptural quality of Gianni Visentin. His extraordinary technique allows him to consistently achieve a completely naturalistic rendering. The subject is always meticulously crafted, with meticulous attention to detail. However, we can see how Visentin continually strives for a more expressionist stylistic style, through a highly evocative contrast in his different approaches to the material. Indeed, while some parts are treated with the sculptor's trademark naturalistic rendering, others are left almost raw. The figure of the dog, in particular, is handled with distinctly material connotations, making the surface extremely vibrant and alive. Overall, we note in Visentin's sculptures a struggle for the assertion of form over matter, clearly referencing the work of Michelangelo and the contemporary reinterpretations of it by masters such as Rodin and Medardo Rosso.
Gianni Visentin was a Venetian sculptor born in Tra Vettore di Rosà in 1938 and who passed away in 2010. A stay in Paris between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s was crucial to his artistic development, allowing him to come into contact with avant-garde art circles and movements. In 1997, he founded the Arte Positiva movement, which found its home in his studio-museum in Carpanè, where many of the artist's works are collected. Some of Visentin's works have been donated to illustrious figures such as John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Mikhail Gorbachev.
