Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the Classical era, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic movements. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Looking at this work, we can fully appreciate the sculptural quality of Gianni Visentin. His extraordinary technique allows him to consistently achieve a completely naturalistic rendering. The subject is always meticulously crafted with meticulous attention to detail. However, it's clear that in this female figure, Visentin is pursuing a more expressionist stylistic approach, through a highly evocative contrast in his different approaches to the material. While the more physiognomic aspect of the subject is rendered with the sculptor's trademark naturalistic rendering, the block it embraces is left in its raw state. The expressive contrast, then, is created precisely by the juxtaposition of the bare stone and the smooth surfaces of the human body. The result is extremely evocative, as is typical of Gianni Visentin's sculptural output.
Gianni Visentin was a Venetian sculptor born in Tra Vettore di Rosa in 1938 and who passed away in 2010. A stay in Paris between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s was crucial to his artistic development, allowing him to come into contact with avant-garde art circles and movements. In 1997, he founded the Arte Positiva movement, which found its home in his studio-museum in Carpanè, where many of the artist's works are collected. Some of Visentin's works have been donated to illustrious figures such as John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Mikhail Gorbachev.
