Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus performer, or mask began to gain popularity, as it played a key role in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown.
In these subjects of clowns and circus performers, Gianrodolfo D'Accardi was able to develop his own original language, expressionist and minimalist (compared to the gestural excitement of the woodland landscapes). The figures are always arranged in a row, side by side, in a two-dimensional, decontextualized space. Typical of D'Accardi's expressionism is the elongated, threadlike appearance his figures take on. As a result, the paintings in this series consistently acquire a distinct vertical tension. But it is above all in the linework, which varies from work to work, that D'Accardi's creativity and inner vision are expressed. The brushwork is always dense and thick, as are the color combinations, which are unpredictable and deliberately dissonant.
Gianrodolfo D'Accardi was born in Palermo in 1906 and died in Varese in 1993. His artistic career began when his family moved to Milan in 1925. There he began exhibiting his work and began to achieve public and critical success. Some of his works were purchased by the Galleria d'Arte Moderna. His work has been exhibited in numerous important exhibitions, including abroad, in cities such as Washington, New York, Paris, and Lugano. He participated in various editions of the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale in 1948. One of his works is exhibited in Milan at Palazzo Sormani. The work "The Flight into Egypt" belongs to the collection of the Cariplo Foundation.
