Gianrodolfo D'Accardi - A Walk in the Woods

Landscape has always been a central focus of artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In the artistic production of Sicilian-born artist Gianrodolfo D'Accardi, landscape often takes center stage: indeed, the human presence, when present, is always minimal. In D'Accardi, landscape is used as a starting point and a research subject to develop a strongly expressionist language.

The work is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no allowance for spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a very tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality. Delving further into the specifics of this "Walk in the Woods," we can see how D'Accardi depicts the vegetation with a series of almost gestural pictorial marks, vertical or diagonal. The application of color is dense and textured. A very bright green dominates the composition, while the signs of human presence, in stark contrast, are colored white.

Gianrodolfo D'Accardi was born in Palermo in 1906 and died in Varese in 1993. His artistic career began when his family moved to Milan in 1925. There he began exhibiting his work and began to achieve public and critical success. Some of his works were purchased by the Galleria d'Arte Moderna. His work has been exhibited in numerous important exhibitions, including abroad, in cities such as Washington, New York, Paris, and Lugano. He participated in various editions of the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale in 1948. One of his works is exhibited in Milan at Palazzo Sormani. The work "The Flight into Egypt" belongs to the collection of the Cariplo Foundation.
