Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to deal with the various
aspects of everyday life, the circus world has been a topic covered by various
authors. With the development of the symbolist and expressionist currents between the end
of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th the character of the acrobat, of the artist
circus or mask have started to have great fortune, as
functional in the development of complex iconographies, with hidden meanings
and mysterious. We can cite as examples the figures of artists and harlequins
immortalized by Picasso in his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1870s and
'80 of the twentieth century has become a real genre practiced by many
painters, who focused their interest above all on the figure of the
clown.
In these subjects of clowns and circus artists Gianrodolfo D'Accardi was able to
develop his own original language, expressionist and minimal (compared to
to the gestural excitement of the woodland landscapes). The characters are
always arranged in a row, next to each other, in a two-dimensional space and
decontextualized. Typical of D'Accardi's expressionism is the aspect
thread-like and elongated shape that his characters take on. In this way, the
paintings in this series always acquire an evident vertical tension.
But it is above all in the line, which changes from work to work, that the
D'Accardi's creativity and inner vision. The writing is always dense and
pasty, as well as the associations of color shades, unpredictable and
deliberately dissonant.
Gianrodolfo D'Accardi was born in Palermo in 1906 and passed away in Varese
in 1993. His artistic career began when his family moved to
Milan in 1925. Here he began to exhibit his works and to collect the
initial successes with the public and critics. Some of his works were purchased
from the Gallery of Modern Art. His works have been exhibited in numerous
and important exhibitions abroad, in cities such as Washington, New York,
Paris and Lugano. He participated in various editions of the Rome Quadrennial.
and at the Venice Biennale in 1948. One of his works is exhibited in Milan at
Palazzo Sormani. The work “The Flight into Egypt” belongs to the collection of the
Cariplo Foundation.
