Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject falls within the genre scene category, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this painting, we can see Gigi Comolli's approach to a highly impressionistic style. He completely eschews the traditional drawing framework, allowing complete freedom for the expressive potential of color. Thus, the figures are synthesized through a decidedly structural approach, constructed with broad, brief strokes of paint. In this work, his technique derives from post-impressionism, which, in addition to conveying immediacy in execution, imbues the work with intense emotional and poetic vibrations. However, both in his choice of subject and his palette, centered on brown and earthy colors, one can discern a strong desire for realism in execution in Comolli's work.
Gigi Comolli (Milan, 1893 – Milan, 1976). He trained at the Brera Academy and embarked on an artistic career that, after the First World War, led him to exhibit in various shows at the Società Permanente and at several Venice Biennials, as well as in several Milanese galleries (Scopinich, Ranzini, Salvetti, Dedalo, and Ars Italica). He was primarily a landscape painter, with a predilection for the Lombard countryside, but he also devoted himself to still life. His works are included in the art collections of the Cariplo Foundation, the Gallery of Modern Art, and the Benefactors' Gallery of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan.
