Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. This work is a significant example of the series of views Meloni dedicated to Venice. In these watercolors, the painter expresses an extremely synthetic technique, where even a single brushstroke can define a form with character and coherence. Despite this minimalist, subtractive vision of the lagoon landscape, Meloni nevertheless manages to remain in the most exquisite tradition of Venetian tonalism. Everything is determined by color, centered on a specific range, to reproduce a specific atmospheric situation in which the objects are coherently fused. It is the brushstrokes that construct the space and light that define the composition. Gino Meloni, an artist born in Varese in 1905, devoted himself to both painting and sculpture. Trained at the Brera Academy, he initially focused on academic Lombard landscape painting. He later came under the influence of Cubism and Expressionism. Only in the 1950s did he find his definitive pictorial path with the "Roosters" and "Venices" series, in which he defined his extremely synthetic and expressive style.
