Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. This is precisely what happens in this series of works by artist Giò D'Amico, in which the subjects draw inspiration from reality but are completely transfigured by the painter's gestures, who, through his brushstrokes, projects his unconscious onto the work.
These interpretations of reality, which artist Giò D'Amico presents in this series of works, are based on an extremely synthetic and gestural style, bordering on the informal. The subjects of the works, which could be a cityscape, a bouquet of flowers, or the flight of a bird, are completely transfigured by the artist's projection of his unconscious through his pictorial gesture. Thus, each object is subjected to such a highly synthesised process that it practically loses its form. Everything becomes an intense pictorial vibration composed of frenetic hatching, dense layers of color, or more textural passages. Furthermore, the choice of color loses all contact with tangible reality, acquiring an expressionist connotation even in the prevailing tonal quality, characterized by strong contrasts and refined disharmonies. A symbolist component is also evident in the recurring presence of the large suns that illuminate the scene.
Giò D'Amico was an artist originally from Milazzo, born in 1921 and died in 1999. He trained in Rome, where he frequented the group of realist painters, with whom he participated in numerous exhibitions. During the same period, he exhibited in Marseille and Paris. In 1950, he moved to Genoa, where he industriously spent the latter part of his life and art. His works are permanently exhibited in important galleries in Monaco, Cannes, Athens, the USA, and other cities in Italy and Europe.
