Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
Giosam is a painter who looks to a great tradition. His gaze is turned to the past, guided by a citational spirit that informs his work. This spirit is found primarily in his choice of traditional subjects—nudes, still lifes, and landscapes. His language also draws on a figurative style that sees mimesis (imitating nature) as its primary purpose. Thus, his strokes are soft, and the application of color is always rich in transparent layers that blur the objects and place them naturally in space. Even his color choices reflect Giosam's taste, with a predilection for brownish hues reminiscent of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Giovanni Sammaruco, known as Giosam, was born in Otranto in 1933. He is an academically trained painter with a remarkable technique. His work is inspired by the tradition and history of painting. His style draws on the Renaissance, Baroque, and Flemish art.
