Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
Giorgio Bonaffini conceives the urban view or landscape as a complex set of volumes. These volumes, however, are constructed by the painter through a complex architectural design, with vibrant, frenetic strokes erecting the scaffolding of the buildings. In this painting, too, the houses overlap in a multidimensional space, constructed from different viewpoints. The contribution of Bonaffini's Cubist exploration of volumes is therefore noteworthy, though he achieves this through a synthetic and expressionist formal rendering.
Giorgio Bonaffini was born in Curtatone in 1921 and died in Mantua in 1996. His artistic production is focused on an in-depth study and interest in architecture, which returns in his works in a modern and original recontextualization.
