The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist currents of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Giorgio Bonaffini's case, the theme of the urban view is linked to his interest in architectural elements, in an in-depth study of buildings.

In this watercolor work, Giorgio Bonaffini demonstrates his excellent painting technique. The impeccable execution of the urban view and the exaltation of the architectural element almost hark back to the principles of "Vedutism." This is primarily due to the solid spatial structure, based on a rigorous perspective box. Also crucial is the tonal unity of the entire work, which, through color alone, ensures coherence to the composition. Despite the use of diluted paint, which lends a vibrant execution, the work has an almost illustrative and didactic quality in its perfection of detail.

Giorgio Bonaffini was born in Curtatone in 1921 and died in Mantua in 1996. His artistic production is focused on an in-depth study and interest in architecture, which returns in his works in a modern and original recontextualization.
