Giorgio Carluccio - Metaphysical Presences

Giorgio Carluccio was born in Tuturano, Brindisi, on October 20, 1948. He studied at the Art School in Lecce from 1964 to 1968 and earned a diploma in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Lecce in 1973.

In the early 1970s, he worked within the avant-garde, drawn to Expressionism, Informalism, and the spatial concepts of Lucio Fontana. In the 1980s, as a teacher, he devoted himself to experimenting with plastic arts at art institutes and high schools.

He resumed his sculpting career in 1992. From 1995 onwards, with his double-sided works in bronze and synthetic stone, he developed the idea of ​​a new approach to sculpture. Beginning in 2001, with the use of multiple materials in the same work, the idea of ​​transcending the unity of the artistic object's formal and expressive elements took shape: breaking down the style and homogeneous formal model in the sculptural work. The compositional structure, the architecture of the work, is achieved from a basic body and subsequent additional applications: parts conceived as independent, held together by a conceptual interrelation. The elements of the language interact in a deliberately metaphysical space—the work conveys a visual perception of aesthetic-formal discontinuity.

Giorgio Carluccio has deliberately never abandoned the "sculpture-object" concept, whether installations or other genres, convinced that new forms of sculpture can be found in languages ​​open to new solutions, not subject to closures or old formalisms, towards a constructive, non-prejudicial liberalism, inspired by the overcoming of gratuitous provocations, of improvisations devoid of content, as has happened in recent years.
