Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts two horses side by side, both standing with their front legs raised, in the center of a beach. The calm sea opens up behind them, while in the distance, an ancient ruin reminiscent of classical architecture can be glimpsed. In the foreground, on the right, two fragments of a marble column appear. Details, such as a red cloth tied to one of the saddles and blowing in the wind, contribute to the composition's movement. The scene is suspended, as if time had stood still. The work displays a formal balance typical of metaphysical painting, with a measured use of color and shape. The setting evokes a timeless atmosphere, in which classical elements such as ruins become symbols of memory and mystery. The composition is clean and orderly, and the gold-plate technique enhances the surface, giving the image a luminous and uniform quality. Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978) was an Italian painter, sculptor, and writer, considered the founder of Metaphysical Painting. He is known for creating a unique artistic language, blending classical elements with a modern and irrational vision. His work is distinguished by profound philosophical and mythological reflections, expressed through recurring symbols such as Italian piazzas, arcades, trains, and, of course, mannequins. His work had a huge influence on 20th-century art, inspiring many artists.
