From Giorgio De Chirico - Horses on the Beach

The sculpture is part of a series that pays homage to great artists by creating silver bas-reliefs from prototypes produced by the painters themselves. In this case, the bas-relief celebrates the art of the great master Giorgio De Chirico by depicting one of his most famous subjects, the horses on the beach. The two steeds, identified as Balius and Xanthus, Achilles' horses, reference a conscious classicist reference. De Chirico's artistic language draws on classical antiquity, both Greek and Roman. All this translates into an execution whose primary objective is mimesis, that is, the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. The work was created from a prototype by Giorgio de Chirico, born in Volos, Greece, in 1888 and died in Rome in 1978. He was the founder of Metaphysical painting. De Chirico reclaimed images that already existed, familiar to the collective imagination. But he created an effect of estrangement through the process of displacement—the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context—or condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical painting is also characterized by the illusory nature of its images.
