Giorgio De Chirico - Hector and Andromache

This type of subject can be classified within the metaphysical aesthetic. The artistic movement founded by Giorgio de Chirico reclaims images that already exist, familiar to the collective imagination. However, it creates an effect of alienation through the process of displacement, that is, the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context, or through condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical art is also distinguished by the ostentatiously illusory nature of its images. The graphic design is inspired by Giorgio de Chirico's "Hector and Andromache."

The plate is emblematic of Giorgio de Chirico's aesthetic choices and features one of the most recurring subjects in his work: the mannequin. According to the rule of displacement, the mannequin inexplicably appears in a square, and moreover in a space constructed according to impossible perspective rules. But the mannequin itself is also the product of an accumulation, constructed from various entities and objects. Even in his graphic work, de Chirico opted for a very objective and dry style, which tends to highlight the figures and enhance their enigmatic and illusory nature.

Giorgio de Chirico was born in 1888 in Volos, Greece. Beginning in 1910, his reading of Nietzsche inspired him to produce his first self-portraits and metaphysical landscapes. From 1911 to 1915, he lived in Paris, exhibiting at various annual salons. At the end of the war, de Chirico moved to Rome and participated in the "Valori plastici" exhibitions. His first solo exhibition was in 1919. Between 1924 and 1929, the artist lived in Paris again. In 1926, he joined the Novecento movement, a clear opposition to modernism. Giorgio de Chirico died in 1978 in Rome.
