Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography developed in this work addresses a crucial concept in De Chirico's poetics, one that is also fundamental to the development of his metaphysical theses: the concept of a "return to origins." For De Chirico, contemporary art should not create new images; rather, the artist should select them from the past, as if it were an ideal museum, arrogating to himself the freedom to rework them into creative compositions. In particular, the subject of this work is inspired by a conscious classicist quotation. The artistic language is therefore inspired by classical antiquity, both Greek and Roman. All this translates into an execution whose primary objective is mimesis, that is, the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Along with naturalistic rendering, the other fundamental concept, according to the parameters of Classicism, is that of the unity of the work of art, through a harmonious correspondence between all its parts.
Classicist quotation is a fundamental component of Giorgio de Chirico's aesthetic. Often, in keeping with the dictates of Metaphysical Art, classical or archaeological references are placed in an unusual context, creating a disorienting effect. In this case, we find ourselves faced with a drawing in which the artist has imprinted his own trademark, namely the presence of an archaic element drawn from a gallery of images from the past. The execution, cold and uninstinctive, is also consistent with De Chirico's rationalism. However, in this work, we can see a more dynamic style on the part of the artist, who employs a highly dynamic hatching style, especially in the rendering of the landscape.
Giorgio de Chirico was born in 1888 in Volos, Greece. Beginning in 1910, his reading of Nietzsche inspired him to produce his first self-portraits and metaphysical landscapes. From 1911 to 1915, he lived in Paris, exhibiting at various annual salons. At the end of the war, de Chirico moved to Rome and participated in the "Valori plastici" exhibitions. His first solo exhibition was in 1919. Between 1924 and 1929, the artist lived in Paris again. In 1926, he joined the Novecento movement, a clear opposition to modernism. Giorgio de Chirico died in 1978 in Rome.
