Giorgio di Venere - Venetian Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

A Venetian painter, Giorgio Di Venere takes tonalism to its extreme, a pictorial language that bases the entire composition on color. As we can see, all of reality is identified with patches of color arranged to give shape to objects. This identification is so extreme that the painter finds himself creating a sort of expressionist landscape, in which reality is brutally synthesized.

Giorgio Di Venere was born in Mestre in 1927. He trained in Venice, first under Guido Balsamo Stella and then under Carlo dalla Zorza. He later attended the Istituto Statale d'Arte, where he also taught. His first exhibitions were at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, where he won the prize for engraving in 1960. His graphic and engraving work brought him considerable critical and public success.
