Giorgio Manzali - Reclining Figures

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

Giorgio Manzali's pictorial style is influenced by his work as a designer, in that he is drawn to conceiving the human figure as an elegant graphic sign, pure and essential. A sort of expressionist synthesis, therefore, which, however, does not prevent the artist from inflating the volumes of the figures and giving them a geometric connotation strongly reminiscent of Cubist gigantism.

Giorgio Manzali trained as a painter and set designer, and since 1980, he has been an architect and designer in addition to his work as a painter. For Manzali, paintings and sculptures are born from a plan, which is why his entire artistic production is imbued with a distinct rationalist spirit. Stylistically, he draws close to the Expressionist and Cubist poetics of the historic avant-garde.
