Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work seems to reflect the artist's desire to create an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal reduction, resulting in an abstract composition. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. This type of landscape interpretation is also typical of Giorgio Morandi's exploration of reality. Fundamental to the artist is his work of reducing the subject until extracting its true essence. This operation is always carried out through light, which engulfs much of the landscape, leaving a few spots to indicate the true essence of sensitive nature.
Giorgio Morandi was one of the leading exponents of twentieth-century Italian painting. Born in Bologna in 1890, he died in 1964. He lived for many years in his home on Via Fondazza, before moving to his summer home in Grizzana in 1960. He trained at the Academy of his city and, from a young age, had been reflecting on Cézanne, Derain, and Picasso. But Morandi also looked to the past, to Giotto and Masaccio. Initially, he was drawn to the Futurists, then participated in the Experiment of Plastic Values. He later embarked on his own unique path, seeking the essence and reality of things. His breakthrough came in 1939 with a solo exhibition at the Rome Quadriennale.
