Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
The style of painter Giorgio Ortona is extremely distinctive and recognizable. He essentially draws on a realist vocabulary, inspired by Edward Hopper and other American painters. However, Hopper's unfiltered reality is completely reworked by Ortona, who fills it with lived experience and emotionally charged vibrations. Indeed, on a formal level, while the drawing is extremely precise, almost hyperrealistic in capturing every minute detail of the object, on a pictorial level, reality is almost frayed into a worn, crumpled space. The weight of existence is felt, even in the inanimate objects that are the protagonists of this painting.
Giorgio Ortona was born in Tripoli in 1960. He trained in Rome and Cadiz, where he attended the international painting course held by his teacher Antonio Lopez Garcia. His works have been exhibited in numerous shows. Several paintings are held in public museums and private collections (the MACRO in Rome, the Michetti Museum in Francavilla al Mare, the Municipal Art Gallery of Forlì, the Municipal Art Gallery of Sulmona, the Cavallini Sgarbi Foundation, and the Becchetti Collection). He lives and works in Rome.
