Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. The work in question is a beautiful example of an eighteenth-century Venetian portrait. The subject is an enigmatic figure revealing her face from beneath a mask.
The composition of this portrait, crafted according to a highly classical and academic conception of artistic practice, is based on the premise of a completely naturalistic rendering, in the definition of volumes and facial features. In this sense, we can see how the painter's language is oriented toward a complete realism, describing every detail in an absolutely truthful manner, even with a certain taste for popular realism. The distinctive feature that makes this painting a work of exceptional quality lies in the technique employed, which relies on an extremely soft and light touch. This, in addition to providing descriptive precision, also achieves a fine mobility of the facial features, blending them softly into the atmosphere and achieving a greater degree of naturalness. However, the entire figure is immersed in the space of the work fluidly, without contrast, welcoming the light. Furthermore, the painting's execution is characterized by a marked painterly style, typically eighteenth-century, which makes the surface, especially the surface, lively and vibrant. The color range is also in line with an exquisitely eighteenth-century conception of portraiture, seeking out light, pastel tones that convey a sensation of softness to the touch.
The work is an exceptional product, both for the context it expresses and for the technical quality used, of 18th-century portraiture.
