Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Even in Giovan Francesco Gonzaga's works without equestrian subjects, the artist maintains his characteristic pictorial dynamism. Thus, even in his landscapes, still lifes, and floral compositions, his hatching is extremely fluid, lending the representation an impressionistic freshness while also imbuing it with a strong expressionistic quality. Compared to his equestrian subjects, however, the pictorial material seems denser, and the synthesis of objects, achieved through the application of color, is more pronounced. The chromatic balance remains impeccable, achieved through the perfect tonal unity of the painted surface.
Giovan Francesco Gonzaga, born in Milan in 1921 and passed away in 2007, traces his origins to a younger branch of the Mantuan family. A primarily figurative painter, he dedicated much of his career to the study and research of equestrian subjects. Gonzaga's aim was to convey the nobility of both the horse and the rider, as well as their dynamic momentum and energy. For this reason, he interpreted his figurative style with more expressionistic elements.
